In September, 1997, Spartacus Educational founder and managing director John Simkin became the first educational publisher in Britain to establish a website that was willing to provide teachers and students with free educational materials.
According to a survey carried out by the Fischer Trust, Spartacus Educational is one of the top three websites used by history teachers and students in Britain (the other two are BBC History and the Public Record Office’s Learning Curve). The Spartacus Educational website currently gets up to 7 million page impressions a month and 3 million unique visitors.

SCORE History/Social Science Project
The former Schools of California Online Resources for Education, History/Social Science (SCORE H/SS) evaluated, aligned, and annotated quality resources from the WWW to the California History-Social Science Content Standards and curriculum. The project was begun in 1995 as a program of the Curriculum and Instructional Steering Committee of the California County Superintendent's Education Services Association (CCSESA). This website (one of four based on the H/SS, English, Math, and Science subject areas) was managed through the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS).
Funding for maintenance of the SCORE H/SS website ended by 2006, and the site was no longer being updated. However, due to the continuing high traffic to the hundreds of activities and lessons hosted on the server, archived versions of those resources will continue to be hosted for the time being.
Important notes:
Due to a lack of personnel and funding, no updates can be made to the existing material. Each item should be reviewed for alignment and obsolescence based on contemporary standards.
Resources were originally evaluated by history/social science leaders in California. Going beyond these links allows student access to unknown material. Each school site is responsible for evaluating resources for appropriateness in the local school community.
